ZONE RINGETTE

Is your athlete 14 or older? Are they interested in joining the pathway to high performing ringette? Here is the information about what the Zone program looks like!

Typical Season

● In late August, we have tryouts for the Zone team

● Those that don’t wish to try out are placed on the Club team which will be added to once the zone team is determined

● U14 & U16 Zone teams are female only or male only. Currently U19 allows male athletes

● For league play, Zone teams play other Zone teams in the LMRL - we are Zone 1

○ Zone 2 - Delta, Richmond, Vancouver

○ Zone 3 - Burnaby, New West, North Vancouver

○ Zone 4 - Chilliwack, Fraser Valley, Surrey

● There are 7 Zones in total

○ Zone 5 - Greater Vernon, Shuswap

○ Zone 6 - Kelowna, West Kelowna

○ Zone 8 - Prince George, Quenel

○ Zone 7 - Houston, Terrace (has not been able to make teams)

○ Zone 9 - Comox, Vancouver Island (has not been able to make teams)

● Each Zone team has made the commitment to attend a tournament in each of the 3 regions: LMRL, Interior, North (PG)

○ Prince George - Nov/Dec

○ Vernon - Oct/Nov

○ Kelowna - Feb

● Previously, the commitment to attend these tournaments and Provincials was in the form of a $5k bond to RBC at the beginning of the season. This season that will be different due to the addition of the U14 Train to Excel Program run by RBC

○ It is in addition to team fees (approximately $335-$455), depending on the roster size

○ This is returned if teams meet the requirement

○ Team fees are roughly $650

● Attend Zone Provincials

○ No longer will the top 2 teams attend Westerns - made up of top teams from the Western provinces

○ RBC will form 2 U14 teams through the Train to Excel program and they will attend Westerns

Tryouts

● Any eligible player may attend tryouts for a fee

○ this year it is $50, must register with your association before August 1st

○ Zone tryouts are taking place in CMRA and PCRMRA rinks

○ The schedule will be on TeamSnap

● Players must attend the 3 sessions - 2 skills, 1 scrimmage, there is one additional scrimmage that will be used as a second look at players. Zone 1 will scrimmage against other zones

● We hire an independent company to evaluate players - you may not discuss your player with the evaluators

● After evaluations, they send us the numbers to approve then it is sent to coaches

○ 1 team, roster of 11-14 players including goalie(s)
○ Final player selection should reflect player ordinals with only minor variation. 80% of the roster will include the players with the highest ordinals while 20% of the roster, as well as any affiliate players, may be determined by the Head Coach
○ RBC is going to change the number of affiliates this season. Previously, each Competitive U14 team was permitted to name three (3) affiliates and one (1) affiliate goalie to their roster. Affiliate players and a goalie are able to participate with the team at practices and can be picked up for games and tournaments. However, affiliate players/goalie must make their Club Division Team their priority. Attending practices, games and tournaments as an affiliate is in addition to their participation on their Club team. If their Club team is in the same tournament, they cannot play for the Zone team.
○ Affiliate players/goalie are limited to participating in a maximum of 10 games in a season.

● Coaches will make phone calls to those that have made the team, an email will go to everyone else

● We try to set the rosters quickly, hopefully prior to the next practice so players can move forward with their designated team.

● Remember to use the 24 hour rule - after which, you may contact your executive for more information

Club Team

● Players will wear the home association jerseys and practice on their ice

● Team fees and tournaments will be at the discretion of the coaches of that team

● Players are responsible for fulfilling their volunteer hours within their home association

Zone Team

● Players will wear the Zone jersey - their may be a change to the logo this season

○ PCRMRA players will be asked to purchase their jerseys

○ CMRA players have the option to purchase or they may borrow a Zone jersey

○ Players will be able to choose numbers, as long as there is no conflict with an existing jersey number already being used

○ Players will need to have plain black game pants

○ Players are required to purchase walk out wear and wear it to all games

● Ice times:

○ 2-3 practices/week before league games start

○ 1-2 practices/week during the season, 1 game (typical)

○ Recommended 1 dryland session/week if players are not involved in multiple sports

● Being on a Zone team, there is a greater expectation of commitment to the team

○ Not being able to attend something, means you contact the coach - you do not just mark yourself unavailable

○ At practices, players are expected to pay attention on the ice and focus on what is happening

● Volunteer Commitment: if you are part of the Zone team, you will be expected to volunteer 2-3 additional hours to your Association required volunteer hours - to be confirmed if awarded a year end tournament

● With travel, fees etc. a family can expect to pay upwards of $1500 for the season per player.
